To the editor:

I am writing today in favor of the proposed Bedford Parks and Highway Department workers' contract. I was very impressed by the overwhelming support of a significant majority of residents present at the July 15, 2014, Bedford Town Board meeting, in favor of approving the "Blue Collar Unit" contract. The majority of Bedford residents looked forward to the approval of the contract at the Tuesday, Sept. 2, Town Board meeting, and we commend our town supervisor and Town Board for working hard to make this happen.

This contract is good for everyone involved, including Bedford taxpayers for whom the cost will be some $7.49 (total) through 2017. The members of our Highway Dept. are true heroes and I have witnessed their heroism in person in front of my home several times, especially the night of Hurricane Sandy when they risked their lives to clear Bedford Center Road at the height of the storm, with a transformer exploding above them, wires flying everywhere and trees falling around like matchsticks.

They risk their lives to clear the roads – that night, as on so many, many other nights – so that residents of Bedford, Bedford Hills and Katonah can get help if we need it. Now it's their turn. To do anything but give our Highway Dept. workers the very best contract that we possibly can would be a disgrace. Let's make our town proud; let's take care of those who make it possible for all of us to live here safely. Thank you, Marianne Delaney Bedford, N.Y.
