To the editor:
With the Nov. 3 town election only a few days away, it's heartening to have three such qualified and accomplished candidates in Supervisor Chris Burdick, Deputy Supervisor David Gabrielson and Town Board candidate MaryAnn Carr.
I know they all have the skills and the commitment to work hard to ensure that our town remains the unique and very special place it is.
Under the leadership of Supervisor Burdick and Deputy Supervisor Gabrielson, the Bedford Town Board showed leadership in reducing the footprint of commercial enterprises in the business districts of historic hamlets such as Katonah, including rebuffing the efforts of CVS to create a large retail facility that would have drastically changed the character of downtown Katonah.
By recommending a 4,000-square-foot cap on all business district enterprises, Supervisor Burdick and Deputy Supervisor Gabrielson made great strides in putting us on the road to smart growth and preserving the character of our town.
The Bedford Democratic team also supported the systematic identification and cataloging of historically significant properties in our town. This was accomplished through the Historic Building Preservation Commission and a respected historic preservation consultant.
They also supported the efforts of the Friends of the Bedford Playhouse to preserve our historic theater in Bedford Village.
David Gabrielson in particular has championed financial support for community organizations. This has included co-sponsoring community events such as holiday tree lighting in our hamlets.
For bona fide community events, the Town will now pay all employee overtime under $500 or 50 percent if the overtime cost is greater than $500.
Those of us lucky enough to live in Bedford know what a special community it is, rich both in natural beauty and our links with neighbors and friends.
I strongly believe that a vote for the Democratic slate on Nov. 3 will preserve this in the coming years.
