BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. – John DiRago, a longtime Bedford Hills resident, died Jan. 22 surrounded by family after a six-month battle with cancer. He was 71.

Born March 3, 1941, in Brooklyn, N.Y., DiRago spent most of his life in Bedford Hills. He served as vice president of the Bedford Hills/Katonah Little League for more than 20 years. He helped with the expansion of the original playing field, cut the grass, served as treasurer and worked in the snack bar.

DiRago also coached his sons’ baseball teams for many years.  He was elected to the Little League Hall of Fame in 1991.

He worked at Mutual of America as payroll manager and retired in 2010. During his free time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife to Las Vegas and Atlantic City and cruising to the Caribbean. He liked to collect shot glasses and coins from his vacation destinations.

DiRago also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, attending many of their games and events and collecting baseball cards with them.

He loved the holidays, his family said, particularly Christmas Eve when he got to play Santa and hand out presents. He was a fan of the New York Giants, New York Rangers and New York Mets.

DiRago is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lynne; five children, Diane (Doug), John (Colleen), Bill (Cindy), Christine (Tim) and Matthew (Debbie); and 14 grandchildren.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oelker-Cox and Sinatra Funeral Home in Mount Kisco. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Kisco.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bedford Hills/Katonah Little League, P.O. Box 446, Bedford Hills, NY 10507.
