Jeanne Rodriguez Schiller, a teacher in the Lakeland School District, died at her Mohegan Lake home on Wednesday, March 1, after a long illness. She was 48.

Schiller had been teaching sixth-graders at the Copper Beech Middle School in Shrub Oak since 2001.

Prior to that, she had been a special education teacher at Greenburgh-Graham Union Free School District in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Born in Manhattan, she moved with her parents, Albert and Mary (McGowan) Rodriguez, to Garnerville in Rockland County.

She is a graduate of Albertus Magnus High School in Bardonia and of SUNY Albany, where, in 1990, she received a bachelor’s degree in sociology.

In 1992, she graduated summa cum laude and a with a degree in early childhood education from Colby-Sawyer College in New Hampshire. She did her teaching internship in New Hampshire as well.

Schiller earned her master’s degree in special education at City College of New York

While teaching in Hastings-on-Hudson, she met her future husband, Paul. The couple volunteered at Camp Viva in Rhinebeck. The program serves Westchester and New York City children with HIV and their families.

Schiller’s family said she loved being a teacher and was always looking for ways to make learning interesting and exciting for her students, especially those with special needs.

She was admired by school administrators and beloved by her colleagues, her family said.

Schiller is survived by her husband, Paul; two sons, Jack and Brian, father, Albert; step-mother, Cheryl; sisters Patricia (Chris) Confrey and Cheryl Ann (Paul) Butler; brothers Al (Catie) Rodriguez and John (Marie) Rodriguez; and nieces and nephews, Lauren, Maggie, Christopher, Dylan, Madison, Alessia, Kane, Nohla, and Maisie.

She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Rodriguez Russell, and step-father, Ray Russell.

Visiting hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, at the Yorktown Funeral Home, 945 East Main St., Shrub Oak.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 1377 East Main St., Shrub Oak.
