Eda Loeb Newhouse, 88, Mother Of Bedford Resident

SCARSDALE, N.Y. - Eda Loeb Newhouse of Scarsdale died Monday, Feb. 10. She was 88.

Newhouse was a resident of Scarsdale for 61 years. She attended the Walnut Hill School in Natick Mass., for her high school education. She then attended Oberlin College, where she studied music. After graduating from college, she moved to New York City and taught piano for several years at the Diller-Quaile School of Music. After her marriage, in 1952, the Newhouses moved to Scarsdale where she continued her professional career as a piano teacher at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School.

She was a member of the Parent Teacher Associations of the schools. She was on the boards of the Greenacres, Heathcote and Middle and High School PTAs and PT Council from 1959 to 1979. She served as the president of the Scarsdale Historical Society. She served in a variety of leadership roles with the Town & Village Club, Friends of Scarsdale Parks, Scarsdale Community Center, Scarsdale Conservation Council, Scarsdale League of Women Voters, Citizens Nominating Committee, Scarsdale Women's Club and the Scarsdale Council for the Arts.

Beyond Scarsdale, she served on the boards of the Westchester Community Foundation, The Westchester Arts Council, the Council of Women's College Clubs of Westchester, the Oberlin College Club and the Women's Enterprise Development Committee. She was the founding board member of the American Jewish Committee's Westchester Chapter. She was also on the women's board of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.

Newhouse is survived by her sister, Kathryn Loeb Wiener of Jackson, Miss.; sister-in-law, Joan Byck Loeb of Montgomery, Ala.; sons, Douglas L. Newhouse (Holly M. Bannister, M.D.) of Weston, Conn., James L. Newhouse (Stephanie Kelly) of Bedford; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley Newhouse, Jr.; parents, Helen Weil Loeb and Lucien S. Loeb; and brother, James Loeb.

Calling hours are at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21 at Congregation Kol Ami, 252 Soundview Ave., White Plains. There will be a memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. and a lunch reception immediately following the service at the home of Eda Newhouse, 10 Morris Lane, Scarsdale.
