MT. KISCO, N.Y.—It was like any other day at the Target in Mt. Kisco until music began to play from a stereo and a lone man on a checkout line began to dance to the beat. A few seconds later he was joined by another dancer, then another. Before the shoppers at Target knew what hit them, they were in the midst of a 63-person Zumba flash mob.
Evan Morrill, a membership consultant at the Saw Mill Club and the organizer of the flash mob, recruited members from the gym’s Zumba class to participate in the event that took place earlier this month. Morrill hoped the flash mob would show people alternatives to traditional workouts.
“We wanted to show people there are ways to work out without having to lift weights or run on the treadmill,” he said. “You can just dance around.”
Many of Target’s shoppers pulled out phones and cameras to capture the event.
“People were hysterical and having a really good time,” Morrill said. He said many of the cashiers stopped what they were doing so they could check out the mob’s moves.
Zumba is a Latin dance aerobics program. Morrill thought it would be perfect routine for a flash mob considering the Zumba students already knew the same dance moves.
The mob danced to several songs for about six and a half minutes.
The Saw Mill Club holds regular Zumba classes where all levels are welcome. The gym is located at 77 Kensico Dr., Mt. Kisco.
