The change removes a layer from the landlord-tenant chain. Burdick explained that the post office has been subleasing the property from Mario Genovesi, who in turn leased it from the town.
Genovesi had a relationship with the town’s property that went back to the 1980s, according to Burdick. He explained that Genovesi developed the building on town-owned land, with his lease being related to it.
The restructuring involves the town taking assignment of the sublease, Burdick explained, a deal that was reached last year.
Making a direct arrangement had support from the post office, according to Burdick.
“The post office, when I first began discussions with them last year, wanted only to have to deal with the town.”
Despite the simplified nature of the restructured arrangement, the post office’s future is still being discussed. Burdick explained that the lease runs through Oct. 31 of this year and that the town is in negotiations for a renewal. The supervisor expressed optimism that the police office will stay at its current location.
The Bedford Hills post office is at 60 Adams St., in the hamlet’s downtown.
