Roberts, Castelli Help Fight Hunger At ShopRite

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y.--As part of National Hunger Action Month, Bedford Town Supervisor Lee Roberts joined state Assemblyman Robert Castelli (R, C – Goldens Bridge) Wednesday at ShopRite in Bedford Hills to help “bag hunger," by bagging groceries to help raise money and awareness for hunger in Westchester.

Joining the ShopRite Partners in the "Caring Program," the grocery store's year-round, community-based hunger-fighting charity, cashiers collected donations to help fill the shelves of community food banks.

The Food Bank for Westchester estimates 200,000 Westchester County residents are hungry, or are at risk of hunger. More than half of them are seniors and one-third are children under the age of 18.

Since its inception in 1999, "Partners in Caring" has donated $24 million to 1,700 hunger relief agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, and Maryland. Last year in Westchester, local organizations distributed more than six million pounds of food to hungry residents.

“Westchester has a tremendous resource in its food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens," Castelli said in a statement. "Helping raise awareness for these vital programs is the least we as elected officials can do."
