Proposed Redistricting Would Impact Westchester

ALBANY, N.Y. – New maps for proposed redistricting were released Thursday, which, if adopted, would change the make-up of several Senate and Assembly districts that include municipalities throughout Westchester County.

Republican State Sen. Greg Ball’s 40th district would be altered significantly.  In Westchester County, he would pick up Mt. Pleasant and New Castle, but lose Bedford.  In Putnam County, he would lose Kent, Philipstown and Putnam Valley.  In Dutchess County, the 40th District would lose Milan, Pine Plains, Northeast, Amenia and Dover, while keeping Pawling and Beekman.

“For me, nothing will change,” Ball said. “My focus before and after re-districting will continue to be on job creation, lowering taxes and working with Governor Cuomo to get New York State back on track.  As a senator, I welcome the opportunity to now fight and deliver for both New Castle and Mount Pleasant.”

Democratic State Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer’s 37th district would add the Town of Eastchester, which had belonged to the 34th Senate District – currently represented by State Sen. Jeff Klein. Oppenheimer’s representatives said they were still studying the proposed redistricting and had no comment Wednesday.

The proposed redistricted map for Republican Assembly member Robert Castelli’s 89th district, which would become the 93rd district, would add the Town of North Salem and alter slightly the portion of White Plains over which he currently presides. He would retain the towns of Bedford, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, North Castle, and Harrison.

The maps released Tuesday are only the first step in the process. There will be a series of public hearings, beginning next week, followed by the release of a revised set of maps. Then lawmakers will have to vote on such a plan, which will then go to the governor for his approval.
