Two properties are of particular interest.
- 20 Stewart Place has been identified by the Building Department as an illegal conversion from a two- to six-family residence. This property was cited with six violations.
- 46 Maple Avenue was also identified as an illegal conversion from a two- to four-family residence. This property was cited with 12 violations including overcrowding, single room occupancies, and other fire safety violations.
The property owner wants the ZBA to grant exemptions from following code. This property owner, like others, has multiple properties throughout the village that have been cited with numerous building and fire safety violations. As such, these are the first of many similar cases we can expect to see in the near future as the Building Department seeks to hold landlords accountable for providing safe and legal dwellings for renters.
It is essential that the ZBA reinforce the need to follow code as interpreted by our current Building Inspector.
Every property owner in Mount Kisco must be held to the same standard and be required to follow fire safety and building codes. There can be no exceptions.
