Knickerbocker, who defeated Al Donahue 324 votes to 187 votes, 63 percent to 37 percent, said it was a great honor to be elected.
"We ran a positive campaign," Knickerbocker said. "We talked about the issues. As a lifelong resident, I can't even explain what it means to be mayor."
Knickerbocker is currently the deputy mayor of the village and served on the village board in the 90s. She said the people of Buchanan can expect her to work in the best interest of the village.
"That's what we have done for the past four years," Knickerbocker said. "We will continue the progress we've made the past four years and have open government that is fiscally responsible."
The mayor-elect is also looking ahead to renegotiating the village's Payment In Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement with Entergy, who runs Indian Point.
"Whatever the best deal is, that's what we're going for," Knickerbocker said.
Improving the town's infrastructure is also a passion project for Knickerbocker.
"I have proven in the last four years that i will work in the best interests of the village and not in my own personal interest," Knickerbocker said. "I work with a great team and people know me as a straight shooter."
Knickerbocker said the election was a proud moment for her and that growing up as a little girl in Buchanan, she never imagined she would become mayor.
After the election, Donahue accused Knickerbocker of being behind mailings sent out that Donahue said lodged personal attacks against him and his family. Knickerbocker denied being behind the mailings.
"We ran a positive campaign," Knickerbocker said. "No attacks were done. I am very disappointed I would be accused of something like that. I didn't even know about them and was quite surprised myself when I found out."
Donahue said he is hiring a private detective to look into the matter.
