WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. Residents across northern Westchester County scrambled to find ways to escape the heat Wednesday as temperatures soared into the 90s.
The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory effective until 8 p.m. Thursday. The combination of increasing temperatures and high humidity, officials say, will make it feel like 100 to 104 degrees. There is also an Air Quality Alert in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Residents should avoid strenuous activity, drink plenty of non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic fluids and take precautions against heat-related illness, Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County Health Commissioner, said. Heat stroke is a medical emergency that claims many lives each year, said Amler. Symptoms include hot, dry skin, shallow breathing and confusion. If you suspect someone has suffered heatstroke, dial 911 immediately, she said. The elderly and young children, in particular, need to be extra careful, according to Amler.
The forecast calls for clear skies overnight Wednesday with a low of 71. It'll be sunny and hot Thursday with a high near 97.
Con Edison and NYSEG officials say they have personnel standing by in the event of a blackout due to power demand. As of 4 p.m., Con Edison was reporting nearly 700 outages in Yorktown and 130 in Peekskill. Estimated restoration time, according to the Con Edison website, was 7 p.m. Meanwhile, NYSEG was reporting 59 customers without power in Lewisboro.
