Neighborhood Scout pulled violent crime information for cities with populations of 25,000 or more and based the number of crimes per 1,000 residents.

Newburgh had a crime index of 6 out of a possible 100, meaning it is safer than only 6 percent of cities in the U.S. The Orange County-based city had 15.84 violent crimes per 1,000 residents; well above the national average of 3.8, Neighborhood Scout said.

The city of 28,480 residents had five murders, 33 rapes, 151 robberies and 262 assaults.

The most dangerous city in the U.S. was Camden, N.J.
