Group Brings Doo Wop to Bedford Village

Good news for fans of music from the 1950s and 1960s.

The group Shades of Soul is performing this weekend with a doo wop-inspired set providing acappella renditions at the Bedford Village Memorial Park at the Bedford Village Memorial Green. It's part of the The Small Town Theater Company outdoor summer program..

The event, which begins at 6 p.m., is sponsored by the Armonk-based company and is free to the public. Shades of Soul is made up of Charlie Balascio, on bass; Bert Archillo, lead and first tenor; Larry Falco, second tenor and lead; Mike Harvey, first tenor and lead; and Bobby “Baby” Walker, baritone and lead.

“It’s just my way of giving back to the community,” said Sam Morell, who co-founded the theater along with Donna Garr.

“We look for different forms of performing arts and that includes everything from plays, cabaret and Broadway-style theater shows, and jazz,” Morell said. “We want to offer a plethora of different performing art programs and allow the audience to experience them.”

Morell said people who attend tonight’s performance are welcome to give donations, but there will be no requests for suggested donations to people as they arrive.

“If people make a donation, it’s fine,” Morell said. “But it rarely covers the cost of admission.”

After tonight’s performance, Shades of Soul”will perform 6 p.m. Sunday at Wampus Brook Park in Armonk. The concert will be moved to the Whippoorwill Hall, which is annexed to The North Castle Public Library in Armonk, in the event of rain.
