BEDFORD, N.Y. - The Bedford fire department was called to help search for a lost hiker Wednesday afternoon. The hiker, who was later found safely, called the police station himself after losing his way along the Westmoreland Sanctuary.
It was no big deal, the man got confused and called us for help. The operation went very well, said Jason Siemers, chief of the department. Three police units, four fire units, and an ATV from Pound Ridge came together to search for the hiker. Around 5:30 p.m. we got a call that the hiker was safe.
The hiker was identified only as a 78 year old male.
According to officials, the hiker spotted a house nearby and walked to it. There, he was able to call for help and returned home safely.
Unfortunately, hikers get lost a lot around here. said Siemers.
