February Could Rank As Coldest Ever In Bedford

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- If February ended on Monday, Feb. 23, it would rank as coldest ever in parts of the region. We still have four more days until March comes in like a lion, but we could see record-breaking lows for the month.

Areas like Bridgeport, Conn.; Kennedy Airport; and Islip are all on pace to have the coldest February on record, according to the National Weather Service

Gary Lessor, assistant to the director of meteorological studies and the Weather Center at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, Conn., told Daily Voice the bitter cold will continue into the first week to 10 days of March before the temperatures start to rise. The month of March will still be cold, averaging about three to four degrees below normal in terms of temperature, Lessor said.

“This weather pattern shows no signs of breaking,” he said. “April will finally become closer to normal, with high temperatures around 60 toward the end of the month.”

The area could see some snow Sunday night into Monday morning, Lessor said. There could be some snow the following weekend as well, and there will be several more chances for snow to fall in the next two weeks.

“There are some indications that next winter will also be colder than normal,” Lessor said. He added that temperatures are not expected to be as cold as this winter, though it is difficult to predict with complete accuracy 10 months out.

“It is not expected to be as snowy," he said. "It should be cold and dry.”
