Farm Satiates Summer Fruit Cravings

 Have a hankering for cherries?

Just head over to the John Jay Homestead Farmer’s Market in Katonah and swing by the Red Jacket Orchard’s stand.

“We’re one of the few places around here that has cherries,” said Mary Mahon, who works at the stand. “If it rains that’s it. We haven’t been affected because we’re further north.”

Red Jacket Orchards, which is operated by the Nicholson family, is located in Geneva, Ontario County and will be at the farmer’s market until it ends in October. The farm ships in a wide variety of fruit including apples, apricots, plums, strawberries, peaches, cherries, raspberries and strawberries.

The orchard also sells apple cider and a number of apple-based juices, such as apple rhubarb, apple apricot and apple strawberry.

Red Jacket operates stands in New York City and has products available at Whole Food markets.

“The fruit is shipped to the Bronx and then we travel to all of the different markets,” said Mahon, who worked her last day at the market before heading back to her native country of Ireland.

“This is my favorite farmer's market,” Mahon said. “At home, if you go to a farmer's market, it’s on field. This is closer to home.”
