Traffic safety has risen as a town priority this year. In September, it was announced that the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) approved lowering the speed limit for parts of Routes 172 and 22.

The affected areas, according to the DOT letter, include a stretch from the intersection of the two roads to the Route 172/Greenwich Road intersection (at 35 mph); a section of Route 172 from Indian Hill Road to the northern intersection with Route 22 (at 30 mph); and a stretch of Route 22 that runs from 900 feet north of Guard Hill Road and goes to Greenwich Road (at 30 mph).

During a September meeting of the safety group in Bedford Village, it was disclosed that the intersection of Routes 172 and 22 will get a regular traffic light. Currently, the intersection, which is located near a Shell gas station, only has a blinking light.
