Bedford Residents Continue to Manage Without Power

BEDFORD, N.Y. - Life after Irene has been irritating to say the least. Loss of power and running water continue to hamper resident’s ability to live a normal life. People are frustrated by the slow response of Con Edison and in some parts NYSEG.People want to bathe, have drinkable tap water, and be able to talk with family and friends viatelephone. It’s rough! The things we take for granted.“The refrigerator’s been a problem, said Marsha Liebowitz. "You can’t refrigerate anything.”Just today the power at the A&P grocery store in Bedford, NY went out. “The lights flickered five times then went out, said an employee, who chose to remain anonymous.How long will perishables keep once electricity is down? The United States Department of Agriculture says the refrigerator will keep food safely cold for four hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for about 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) and the door remains closed.
