BEDFORD, N.Y. ? Bedford police said they are treating what is normally a private matter a suicide with as much care and tact as possible given the prominence of Mary Richardson Kennedy s family.
The police found the body of Kennedy, 52, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on Wednesday, and on Thursday officially confirmed her identity. The Westchester Medical Examiner's Office on Thursday ruled the cause of death to be asphyxiation by hanging.
Bedford police Lt. Jeff Dickan said he had received hundreds of emails from the press since Wednesday evening, but he mostly just cites the need to offer the family privacy. Dickan said that this is still an open case, and the police are treating this high-profile case like any other suicide. That means affording the victim and her family the same rights to confidentiality as any other, he said.
It's just a tragic thing," Dickan said.
He did confirm that one or more members of the Kennedy family was at the Bedford police station Thursday morning to speak to the police, and that some of the people who were on the Kennedy property at the time of the discovery of the body have spoken to the police.
