Bedford GOP Leader Lines Up Behind Romney

BEDFORD, N.Y. — Don Scott, chairman of the Bedford Republican Town Committee, made two predictions for Tuesday's GOP presidential primary: turnout in the area will be low but Mitt Romney will do well among Bedford voters.

Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Romney are on the ballot in New York. Registered Republicans are eligible to vote. Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, suspended his campaign April 10, citing his daughter’s health issues.

“With Santorum and the others dropping out, I think it will be a very light turnout,” Scott said. Also, none of the Republican candidates campaigned in the Westchester County area, he said.

Gingrich, a former House speaker from Georgia, and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas could pick up former Santorum supporters, Scott said.

Romney polled the highest among likely Republican voters in the state in a recent Siena College poll. “It would be hard to imagine a scenario in which anyone else won,” Scott said. If Romney wins, Scott said, “he’ll do very well nationally.”

Romney has been a Republican governor in Massachusetts, which has a Democratic majority, Scott said. “He really has the potential to be an effective bipartisan president.”

A total of 1,144 delegate votes are needed to win the nomination at the Republican National Convention in August. Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Delaware also have primaries today.

New York will hold primaries for congressional candidates June 26 and for state and local offices Sept. 11.
