Becker to Run For Congress

CORTLANDT, N.Y. -— Town of Cortlandt councilman Richard Becker announced his candidacy against Representative Nan Hayworth in an exclusive interview with The Daily Cortlandt,

The democratic councilman will run against freshman Republican Hayworth for her seat in the House of Representatives for the 19th District of New York.

“We’ve made a decision as a team to go ahead,” said Becker, “We’re going to have a formal announcement in the not too distant future, shortly, but right now I’m announcing that I’m running.”

Becker, a Hudson Valley Hospital Center cardiologist, announced just more than a month ago that he was considering a run.

“I think she’s so disconnected from medicine in general,” said Becker in an earlier interview with The Daily Cortlandt. “She voted for the Ryan Act, which to me is the end of Medicare. That was one of the factors that motivated me.”

Hayworth was an ophthalmologist before serving in the 112th U.S. Congress.

Becker expects his run for the House of Representatives to cost about $2 million because of the size of the district and because Hayworth is “well-funded.” He will run concurrently for town councilman and U.S. Congress. He is running for town councilman without democratic opposition.

Becker said he will provide more information about his candidacy and platforms in an upcoming meeting. The 19th District of New York encompasses parts of Westchester, including Peekskill, Cortlandt, Yorktown, Mount Kisco, Bedford, Pound Ridge and Lewisboro as well as Rockland, Dutchess, Orange and Putnam counties.
