Army Celebrates 240th Birthday With Parade, Speeches In Westchester

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- The Westchester County/ Bronx Recruiting Company will be celebrating the 240th birthday of the U.S. Army with a celebration in Valhalla on Sunday.

Soldiers assigned to Westchester County and the Bronx will join forces with American Legion Post 112 and Boy Scouts Troop 1 to commemorate this patriotic occasion. There will be several guest speakers, a flag folding, cake ceremony and swearing in of local future soldiers. 

Events will run from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Town Hall, 1 Town Hall Plaza, Valhalla. The ceremony will run from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and the parade will run from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Guest speakers will include the following: 

  • Rita Cosby, Emmy Award-winning newscaster, and daughter of a World War II prisoner of war 
  • Peter Fiumefreddo, commander of Hawthorne American Legion, Army veteran 
  • Capt. Abigail Tassa, grand marshal and Bronx Recruiting company commander 

Fifteen young men and women from the Bronx and Westchester area will reaffirm their enlistment oath to the Army during the swearing-in ceremony. They’ll be shipping to basic initial training within the year. 

There will also be a Boy Scout flag ceremony and a cake-cutting ceremony; cake provided by American Legion.
