'Spring Into Summer' to Benefit Katonah Library

KATONAH, N.Y. — The Katonah Village Library is inviting library users to "Spring Into Summer” this Friday evening. For $50 a head, attendees of the festive spring fundraiser at the library can connect with friends and neighbors over wine, beer and savory hors d'oeurves. A disc jockey will provide music, and there will be raffles and a live auction.

"We’ve realized that given the economy and given the fact that not everyone can afford a premium price point, we’re trying to make this as inclusive and democratic as possible," said library Trustee Vivian Song, who organized the event.

Song said she wants it to be so that people who want to participate and who want to give will feel welcome to attend.

The library usually puts on a more formal fundraiser during the fall, Song said. In the past the fundraisers have been at venues such as the Bedford Historical Society and the Salem Golf Club in North Salem.

The money that is raised will go to the library’s operating budget, Library Director Van Kozelka said, “because starting in 2011 the town funding was cut by 10 percent, so now we have to raise more money to operate the library and keep it open.” This is essential, she said, for the library to continue to operate all seven days of the week, which it began doing after reintroducing Sunday hours in March.

"If you are going to support anything in a town, I would imagine it would have to be the library,” Song said. “It’s pretty basic, and I hope other people feel that way as well."

The library functions as a community center, Song said. “It gets people out of just being on their computers and somewhere else where they might meet a friend or they might run into someone,” she said. “I think that’s important.”

The event begins at 8 p.m. at the Katonah Village Library, 26 Bedford Road. Those interested can order tickets on the library's website or purchase them at the door.

Raffle prizes will include free training sessions at Shawn's Personal Fitness, gift certificates from Little Joe's Books and Tengda, a massage from Satori, and pasta for two at the Blue Dolphin Ristorante. Items to be auctioned off include fine wines, electric guitar lessons, Jets tickets and an upstate family getaway at Minnewaska Lodge.
