Breaking News: NY Will Move To Legalize Recreational Marijuana In Coming Days, Reports Say

Letter: Westchester Dems Must Realize Compromise Is Key

KATONAH, N.Y. – In a Jan. 2 letter to The Daily Voice, Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham (D-Katonah), majority leader of the Board of Legislators, gave his take on the 2013 county budget passed on Dec. 10. In this letter, Gregory Kaplowitz of Katonah responds.

To the Editor:

I read in the past few weeks about what went on in the county legislature and I could not help but think of an out-of-control kindergarten classroom where the teacher is working heroically to establish order against an increasing wave of insanity. If these serious times are not the time for politicians on both sides to work together to create the conditions for growth and opportunity for our residents to fill, then I cannot fathom a better one. Mr. Harckham’s behavior and some of the Democratic caucus leaves me wondering why my grandfather and father bothered to serve this nation in uniform.

One wonders what they would think if they could be in that chamber watching such infantile behavior in light of the continuing economic calamity we face. If they were in that chamber I guarantee you that they would make certain the business of Westchester County was done for the maximum benefit of its residents at all times. I recognize we live in a “get me, give me” state, but at some point, the serious among us must rise to the occasion and pass balanced budgets and do whatever is necessary to provoke job creation and economic growth. What do you say we make 2013 the best yet and go roaring into 2014?

That will take compromise, hard work and a bit of luck. Mr. [Michael] Kaplowitz (no relation) demonstrated that by working with Mr. [Rob] Astorino, and I’m hopeful will do so again. Maybe it should be the year that Mr. Harckham follows Mr. Kaplowitz’s example? Mr. Kaplowitz and Mr. Astorino are leading by example.  It’s an example we should all be proud of.

Sincerely, Gregory Kaplowitz Katonah
