To The Editor,
"I'm a teacher, I'm an educator and I'm not a politician," MaryEllen Elia told reporters Thursday. "I understand the difference in those roles."
This statement by the newly appointed commissioner of the New York State Education Department is a sign of leadership and change that would be most welcomed in our district.
Bedford Central's problems stem from superintendents who behave like politicians and former school board presidents who condoned it.
Huge annual deficits, debt rating downgrades, record per pupil spending and overcrowding at schools are the most pressing issues facing our school district.
Bedford Central needs a school board president who understands finance, is unafraid to speak the truth about our fiscal woes and who will find solutions to fix them. It is inarguable Mike Solomon is the most qualified person and has more experience in financial matters than any board member currently running for president and vice president.
He sits alone as the only board member to publicly speak out against fiscal imprudence.
Let's place the right person in the right position to lead us out of the financial mess we are facing. Placing Mr. Solomon in that role would be the first sign of leadership the new board can exhibit and would signal to the community that true change has arrived.
