Golf Classic's Community Feel Suits Co-Chair To A Tee

BEDFORD, N.Y. – Real estate broker David Schechtman embraced the community feel of the Northern Westchester Hospital’s Golf Classic four years ago when he first attended the event. Now, he finds himself in a leading role for the June tournament.

A Bedford Corners resident, Schechtman first participated in the tournament as the guest of another golfer. He quickly found out this was not just another fundraiser.

“Everyone was so welcoming,’’ Schechtman said. “You quickly begin to understand how much the community supports and values the Hospital and why you want to be involved too. The variety of people I got to meet shows how important NWH is to our entire community.”

The outing is scheduled for June 18 at GlenArbor Golf Club in Bedford, and includes golf, lunch, dinner and awards. Funds raised from the event will support the construction of a new Operating Room Suite and a new Post-Anesthesia Care Unit.

Thanks to a generous community, dedicated physicians, committed volunteers, and steadfast sponsors, last year's Golf Classic raised over $160,000.

Schechtman, a principal and executive managing director at the New York City commercial real estate powerhouse Eastern Consolidated, is the co-chairman of the tournament this year, along with David Miller, MD, Chief of Anesthesia at NWH.

The tournament offers participants the opportunity to interact with some “incredible physicians from the Hospital.” The diverse group of people who attend make the event different than other outings, he said.

“By talking to the golfers, you begin to understand that each participant, whether a Hospital employee or someone from the community, has a special connection to NWH and is more than willing to share why they feel it’s important to support their local community hospital."

Similarly, the Hospital itself is impressive, he said.

“When people think of the best medical professionals, they think you have to go to New York City,’’ Schechtman said. “But just 35 miles north of Manhattan, you have some of the finest medical talents in the world.”

“The entire Hospital staff is so unassuming,’’ he said. “Participating as co-chair of this event feels natural as I grow into the community. It’s an honor to do it, and we’ll continue to bring people together to make it a fabulous event.”
