Fortin's A Fixture At Scotts Corner Market In Pound Ridge

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- I first met Billy Fortin, owner of the Scotts Corner Market on the eve of Superstorm Sandy. My wife had sent me to buy batteries and when I arrived, I discovered they were sold out.

Billy Fortin, who owns Scotts Corner Market in Pound Ridge, started working at the store at age 16.

Someone who looked like a 1970s version of Eric Clapton handed me a pack and said he was holding it for another customer who never showed up. This champion of portable energy was Billy.

As most in town already know, he has roots here and started his affiliation with the Market at age 16. For those who do not know the Market’s history, it was founded in 1952 by the Norkin Brothers in Norwalk. Soon after, it was destroyed in a flood and was moved to Pound Ridge where for several years it was located in the building now housing Chubby’s Hardware.

Fortin admits he earned part of his education at the School of Hard Knocks and started out as most kids do with a few bumps along the way. The result is a local businessman with a strong work ethic. His hard work is what makes the Market the anchor business in town by providing excellent service.

“I’m fortunate to have such great people working here”, Fortin said, referring to his 100 store employees. He is also aware his customers are well educated and expect total integrity and better quality when shopping in the 30,000 square foot store.

“We sell only certified Angus beef,” he added and that he procures from the Hunts Point and Fulton markets each day for the best quality produce and seafood available.

Fortin's presence in Pound Ridge is even more evident with his efforts in serving the community. He is recognized by all local service organizations for his involvement in making Pound Ridge a better place to live and work.
