Workshop facilitator Cindy Beer-Fouhy led the seniors in the event on April 9 in honor of National Poetry Month, one by one they took the microphone and read aloud to an audience of adoring family, friends, and community guests including Councilman Vishnu Patel.
"Images from long ago came alive off their pages; Dorothy’s landing her first job, Eva’s garden cultivated from a Yonkers sandpit, Gloria’s becoming a piano teacher, Christopher’s separation from his active duty bride as they both shipped out to opposite parts of the world during the war, Dixie’s childhood in South Carolina. And so on," representatives wrote in a press release. "The Country House honored its writers with a reception following the ceremony. The dining room buzzed with conversation and laughter as residents and guests recalled moments and memories sparked by the events of the evening."
Beer-Fouhy said Executive Director Anita Lary and The Country House "understand the importance of introducing creative activities to today’s senior population. Writing helps to sharpen mental capacity, physical abilities and senses. It boosts self-esteem and encourages positive social interaction.”
