Costumed Marchers Drawn To Bedford Village Halloween Parade

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Marchers in Bedford Village's Halloween Parade on Friday wore an array of costumes, ranging from Darth Vader to a tiger.

The parade was a family friend affair, as several kids and babies were dressed up, along with participating parents.

The march began in front of Bedford Presbyterian Church and headed north along the Village Green. It then turned to Court Street before concluding in front of Bedford Village Elementary School.

The hamlet's annual parade is sponsored by the Bedford Village Lions Club.

George Fernandez, the club's president, described it as a “kick-off event” for events that go on in the year. Fernandez also touched on the Lions' philanthropic work, mentioning the scholarships they give to Fox Lane students annually.

Mark Boyland, who has chaired the parade for years, mentioned how it was not held in 2011 and 2012 due to weather, before being resumed last year. He said that the turnout was good. Boyland also mentioned the Fire Department's participation.

Aside from firefighters who participated in their gear, a Bedford firetruck was leading the marchers.

Bedford Supervisor Chris Burdick, who is also secretary for the Bedford Village Lions, was pleased with the weather being better this year.

Burdick also mentioned parades that were held across town.

“It's so nice that we have the three Halloween parades, one in each of the hamlets," he said, noting the parades that were also held in Bedford Hills and Katonah.

The Bedford Village Lions' next event is a pancake breakfast, according to Fernandez. It is scheduled for Dec. 14 at Historical Hall.
