Bedford resident Conor Lane, a junior at Iona Prep, has organized relief efforts with the school’s Leadership Program to provide basic necessities to the residents of Texas and Florida who are still busy cleaning up from the recent rash of hearty hurricanes.

Since the hurricanes hit land, students at Iona Prep, led by Lane, have been collecting items that include diapers, soap, toothbrushes, deodorant and other everyday items that are scheduled to be loaded onto a truck procured by Lane, which will be driven directly to Texas and Florida for distribution.

The truck is scheduled to leave New Rochelle at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

“At Iona Prep, we are taught the foundation of our Christian values and at the heart of those values is social responsibility.  It’s important that we live as we are taught,” Conor wrote in a letter to the entire PK4-12 school community. “It is our responsibility as men to put into action what we are taught and what we live every day by helping people in these tragically affected communities.

“The victims of these disasters are struggling without the basic necessities we take for granted every day. Homes have been lost, children have been separated from their families, and elderly people are living in makeshift shelters. Simply put, entire communities have been destroyed. People within these communities have lost everything but the clothes on their backs.”
