Unlike many opportunities that fund mid-size and large institutions, Arts Alive Grants are designed specifically to support community-based arts activities. Arts Alive Grants also fund artists to create new work, as well as support partnerships between schools and individual artists or arts organizations. “Arts Alive Grants are modest in size, but have a big impact because they make the arts central to community life. Our goal is to ensure that the arts are available throughout the county, from our densely populated urban areas to the rural northern tier.   Our priorities include supporting projects that engage people who may not have many opportunities to participate in the arts,” said Janet Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester. Projects supported in the past include a jazz mentoring program for Peekskill middle and high school students, a series of outdoor community theater productions in White Plains, and a series of performances featuring music and dance of South America in Greenburgh.  Last year, artist Gabrielle Sia also received a grant to create a mosaic mural in a public park in Elmsford and artist Kristin Linder received a grant to work with Ossining High School students on an interdisciplinary project designed to deepen their knowledge of American music. ArtsWestchester’s staff is available to assist potential applicants develop competitive applications.”We understand that most of those applying are not professional grant writers and we are here to help them throughout the application process,” Langsam said.  The application deadline is Oct. 17, 2014.
