BEDFORD, N.Y. -- This past weekend, visitors to the Bedford Playhouse, built in 1947, could try to imagine what the new Bedford Playhouse will look like once renovated.

Volunteers were giving out refreshments and hard-hat tours of the beloved landmark.

The town rallied and donated the $2.5 million in funds necessary to refurbish the Playhouse and keep it from falling into the hands of a retail store.

"But the promise of a place where food and wine would be served while anyone could sit in the theater morning, noon and night, will make the Playhouse a great hangout," Carol Bloom Stevens said.

Sarah Long, chairperson of Bedford Playhouse, outlined the three types of theaters being planned inside. One theater described as flexible space, will be named after donor David Worby. The second theater, in a more traditional setting, will be named after two donors: Ed Filipowski and Mark Lee. The third theater will feature a 36-foot screen, one of the largest in Weschester, and have 200 seats.

An elevator will be installed in the building along with an additional bathroom. The old-fashioned tiles in both the men's and ladies rooms will be preserved as is.
