Two Westchester Post Offices Offer Extended Hours For Tax Day

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y.  -- With more and more people filing tax returns online, less and less post offices in the area are staying open late.

Ossining's post office is open until 7 p.m. April 15.

Ossining and Yonkers Main post offices are the only two in Westchester offering extended hours -- to 7 p.m. -- April 15.

On the plus side, Bronxville, Tarrytown, Scarsdale, Port Chester, Purchase, Mamaroneck and the Martine Station in White Plains are open until 6 p.m., hopefully giving you enough time for that April 15 postmark.

If you're really crunched, you can cross the Tappan Zee Bridge, where the post office at the Palisades Center Mall in West Nyack is open until 8 p.m. Your other option: New York's James A. Farley post office at 421 8th Ave., which will be open til midnight.

The U.S. Postal Service recommends the following filing tips:

  • If depositing returns in a blue collection box April 15, double-check the pick-up schedule on the label. To ensure getting the April 15th postmark, deposit returns before the last scheduled pick-up time.
  • Affix the appropriate postage, especially since the item may weigh more than an ounce. The IRS will not pay postage due and your filings will be returned if there is insufficient postage. The cost of a one-ounce letter is $0.49 and $0.21 for each additional ounce.
  • Be sure and include a return address on the envelope. Short-paid items without a return address will be sent to the postal mail recovery office for determination of the sender, delaying its return.
  • Getting the security of proof of mailing and proof of delivery of your tax returns -- use certified mail service with a return receipt, plus the applicable postage.
