The article gives a history of Giuseppe Verdi's rarely performed French operas - and his rather low opinion of France. The Caramoor is reviving the opera in honor of the Italian composer's 200th birthday.
"Vêpres” is a quasi-historical account of a Sicilian uprising against French occupation in 13th-century Palermo.
"Conducted on Saturday with lively authority by Will Crutchfield and featuring an eager chorus, 'Vêpres' revealed its swirling vigor," the article said. "The Orchestra of St. Luke’s played with an energy that underlay even the lyrical passages; Mr. Crutchfield deftly balanced courtliness and anxiety in the tarantella introduction to the Act II finale."
The article went on to praise the cast of Angela Meade, John Osborn, Marco Nisticò and Burak Bilgili.
The Caramoor will perform selections from Verdi's other French operas on July 20.
