Don’t over exert yourself: When we join the gym, it is easy to get excited about a workout routine. However, it is important not to push yourself or your body too much. If you are new to the gym, start slow and talk to an expert about the right workout based on your personal goals. For example, begin with some light strength training or speed walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes.

Make simple changes to your everyday life: If you cannot make it to the gym during the week, find another way to exercise. Take the stairs daily instead of the elevator; if it is a nice evening, go for a walk outside around the neighborhood; or park your car further away from the entrance of a building. Having options at home, like DVDS, dumbbells, or exercise bands, are especially helpful in inclement weather or if you are short on time.

Cut out the sugar: If you are looking to stop drinking sugary drinks, now is the time. By eliminating soda from your diet, you slash a ton of calories which can lead to weight loss. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you still need a “kick” to your drink add some fresh fruit.

Create a healthy diet: Add plenty of color to your plate. Create meals filled with vegetables, protein and healthy carbohydrates. If you still have cravings for junk food, find a healthy alternative. If you are yearning for ice cream for dessert, try making a parfait with Greek yogurt, berries, honey and granola, or have a portion-controlled amount of the “real” thing. Be mindful of total calories consumed; even though a food may be a healthier option does not mean you can have unlimited amounts of it. If you find it challenging to sort out all the facts from myths, make an appointment with a qualified professional, such as a Registered Dietitian.

Get plenty of sleep: The human body needs at least eight hours of sleep each night. Receiving the appropriate amount of sleep will boost your mood and increase productivity — making it easier to stay active during the day.

Be realistic about your goal: It is normal to expect results right away when you start your new health routine. However, most results won’t show until a few weeks or months in. Instead of focusing on the number on the scale and how much weight you need to lose, focus on how you feel mentally and physically.

If you are ready to make a healthy change in your life this New Year, make sure to do it the right way. Mount Kisco Medical Group can connect you with a nutritionist and help achieve your goals in 2016 and beyond.
