Douglas, a stage and screen actor and film producer, turns 72 on Monday.

He was born in New Brunswick, N.J., on Sept. 25, 1944, to actors Kirk Douglas and Diana Dill.

He studied drama at the University of California.

Douglas’ career covers a wide range of both independent and blockbuster films. He has received a number of honors, including the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award and the AFI Life Achievement Award.

Douglas received three Emmy Award nominations for his role in the ABC crime series, “The Streets of San Francisco.” 

Douglas also produced the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” which received critical acclaim and the Academy Award for Best Picture. He went on to produce and star in other films such as “The China Syndrome” and “Romancing the Stone.”

Douglas also won an Oscar for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in Oliver Stone’s film, “Wall Street.”

His other notable film roles include “The War of the Rose,” “Basic Instinct,” and “The Game.”

As Liberace in HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” Douglas won Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild awards.

Douglas, a cancer survivor, is also active in humanitarian causes. He is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones. They have two children, Dylan Michael and Carys Zeta.
