"Freeheld," which was shot at the Theodore Young Community Center in Greenburgh and in Rye Brook's village hall, opens at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville on Friday.

The movie is based on the true story of Laurel Hester, a New Jersey cop dying of cancer, who fought to make sure her pension was left to her domestic partner, Stacie Andree. Julianne Moore and Ellen Page play the couple. The film also stars Steve Carell and Michael Shannon.

The community center was a stand-in for a hospital room while Rye Brook's village hall was used for a scene where Hester and Andree apply for a domestic partnership. Filming also took place near Rye Ridge Shopping Center and at a home in Rye Brook.

"It was exciting to see the crews, actors, actresses around town," Supervisor Paul Feiner said. "I'm glad Greenburgh is a destination point for Hollywood."

Salesian High School in New Rochelle denied the movie 's request to shoot there due to the film's subject matter.
