Cameron's 24/7 Delis in Brewster and Cross River have a finger on the pulse of customers, and one of the big keys to their success has been offering its Cluck'en line of sandwiches. Any time.
Cameron's is the home of the amazingly popular - and trademarked - Cluck'en sandwiches.
There's the omnipresent showstopper that started it all, and remains the most popular - the Cluck'en Russian (chicken cutlet, melted muenster cheese, bacon, Russian dressing on a toasted roll), as well as the Cluck'en Ranch (same, with ranch dressing), the Cluck'en Q (w/turkey and BBQ sauce), the Cluck'en Club and the Cluck'en Combo.
How popular is the Cluck'en Russian? Parents have been known to come in and ask for several of the sandwiches, then freeze them and send them off to their kids in college who are craving the delightful treats.
The Buffalo Blue (chicken cutlet, melted mozzarella, virginia ham, blue cheese, buffalo sauce on a toasted roll) and the Sicilian Supreme (chicken cutlet, melted mozzarella, pepperoni, roasted peppers on a toasted roll) are also among the most requested specialty sandwiches.
Cameron's sandwich selection, coupled with the fact that the deli never closes - has made it a hit with customers, who know they can hit one of the locations anytime - and get anything on the menu.
The Cluck'en sandwiches have grown so popular that the deli has trademarked the names.
Manager Amando Ochoa of the Brewster store (at 2241 Route 6) said the owners tried to come up with ideas people would love. "We wanted a place where we could go anytime, so our motto is 'our door is always open," Ochoa said.
"You can get anything we have any time - and not only food, but convenience items," he added.
Ochoa added that owners actually threw out the key in the Lewisboro location (Route 35 in Cross River) as a joke - but they really did get rid of the key.
"We've been in Lewisboro for 20 years, and we've never closed. Not once," he said. "During the blackout of 2003 we had lines of people waiting."
Cameron's also makes sure only top quality, fresh ingredients are used in their sandwiches and fresh salads. "We also use 100 percent olive oil and zero percent trans fat oils on all our fried or grilled foods," Ochoa said. "It makes a big difference.
"People are thrilled with our food, our sandwiches," Ochoa added. "They know they can come in any time, we've gotten so many compliments on the food, people love that they can come in the middle of the night, or whenever."
While the Lewisboro location has become an institution, especially being close to the high school, the Brewster location has now been open two years, and is following the same formula for success.
So much so that Cameron's has now become a franchise, and will be opening more locations . The next is planned for upstate Queensbury, N.Y.
