Summer Solstice Party: Join us at Rochambeau Farm on Friday, June 21, at 6:30 p.m. Known as the "Commanding Heights," there is a stretch of land in Bedford that has remained untainted by development for over 300 years.
It is here, in the summer of 1779, that a lookout posted on Guard Hill fired his pistol three times to warn of the enemy approaching. Below this historic landmark sits Rochambeau Farm, a newly built New England style farmhouse on 67 acres complete with horse pastures, stables and a neighboring farm stand. And it is here that you are invited to a summer solstice celebration to benefit the Bedford Historical Society. "Rochambeau Farm was shaped by history," says Mary Ann Hawley, the house owner. "My goal was to create a gathering place that I could share with others. This is the highest point in Westchester County and the views are beyond breathtaking. It just wouldn't be right to keep them to myself," she added. Mary Ann and her co-host, Alex Hamer, are having a variety of wonderful appetizers, summer cocktails and a dance floor so guests can dance under the stars and enjoy the vistas. Sponsors Sidney Frank Importers and Vine and Co. are contributing to this event to support the Historical Society. Tickets are $200 each and 100 percent of the ticket price will be donated to the Society's Preservation Fund. Dig Into Local History: The Historical Society and Bedford Free Library are teaming up to offer you a fun filled event on the Green on Wednesday, July 10, at 3:30 p.m. You can dig into history with a visit to the School House, lessons with the School Marm, Colonial Games and more.
A Note From Lynn Ryan: This morning a family stopped into The Bedford Store to pick up some postcards and purchase one our walking tour maps. It turned out that they had lived in Bedford years ago but a job change had sent them to California. Seeing the Village though their eyes was a reminder of how fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful place. It's easy to take the historic charm of the Village for granted because we see it every day. But the efforts of the Historical Society, the Town, the Bedford Village Business Association, Friends of the Burying Grounds, Garden Clubs and others all help to make the Village a beautiful, yet vital place. To accomplish our goal of preserving and sharing Bedford's history, the Historical Society relies on annual membership dues, fundraisers and income from four rental properties. This month, we hope you'll support us by attending the fundraiser at Rochambeau Farm.
