BEDFORD, N.Y. — A sustainable food community potluck, a wine-tasting event and an afternoon with an award-winning science fiction writer are among the events happening in Bedford this weekend.

Friday, March 1

Food and Energy: Community Potluck and Discussion: 6:30 p.m. Co-organized by Doug DeCandia, Pauline Schneider and Melissa Boyer, this event features a short panel presentation and a sustainable "slow food"-style potluck meal. It will provide opportunities to learn about local activities related to food and energy sustainability. Katonah United Methodist Church, 5 Bedford Road, Katonah.

Parents Night Out: 6:30 p.m. The first and third Friday of every month is Parents Night Out. Drop off your child (ages 5 through 12) for a night of movies, board games, snacks, juice, gymnastics, relay races and contests in a safe environment with qualified instructors. American Gymnastics/Gym Care Preschool, 317 Railroad Ave., Bedford Hills.

World Day of Prayer: 10 a.m. The churches of the Katonah area will join churches around the world in prayer and worship. The Women of Faith, a committee representing a variety of church denominations in the area, is hosting. Katonah United Methodist Church, 5 Bedford Road, Katonah.

Meet Joan Slonczewski, Award-Winning Science Fiction Author: 1:30 p.m. Come hear Joan Slonczewski, a former Katonah resident, discuss her science fiction writings, including her latest work, "The Highest Frontier," Slonczewski's second book nominated for the John W. Campbell Memorial Award. She previously won the Campbell Award for "A Door Into Ocean," the first book of her Elysium series. The Sci-Fi Book Club's discussion of "Variant" by Robison Wells has been canceled. Katonah Village Library, 26 Bedford Road, Katonah.

Katonah Village Improvement Society 2013 Wine Tasting Event: 7:30 p.m. The KVIS Wine Tasting is an annual celebration of wine, food and community. Attend this fundraising event and enjoy a spectrum of wine styles from Albarino to Zinfandel along with hors d'oeuvres and a raffle with prizes such as gourmet gift baskets and bottles of wine.
