The center is spearheading the countywide initiative called "1 Camera, 2 Hours: How Many Plastic Bags?" based on the original project from Pleasantville High School's Cary Chapman. The program's goal is to raise awareness about the pervasive environmental issue concerning single-use plastic bags, and encourage the use of reusable shopping bags.

"In just a few decades, single-use plastic bags have impacted land and marine life across the planet, and we anticipate great interest in this student driven initiative," representatives said. "The Greenburgh Nature Center has been reaching out to the Environmental Clubs, Green-Teams, and art classes from public and private schools across Westchester County."

Students who participate in the project spend two hours walking around their communities to count, record and pick up all the single-use shopping bags they see littering their communities. The artwork that will be on display is the visual representation of each student’s two-hour journey.

The project will culminate with an art exhibit at the Greenburgh Nature Center at 4:30 p.m., March 1, 2014. Students who submit work will have their projects displayed at the event and have the opportunity to speak about their experiences. The exhibit is free and open to the public on March 1. The exhibit will be displayed through April 30 and admittance to the exhibit starting March 2 is included with the center's price of admission.
