Fairview police officer saves drug overdose victim with Narcan

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Fairview police officer used Narcan to revive an attempted suicide victim who’d ingested several anti-depressants and a large amount of cough medicine last night — the first such save for the department.

Officers found the 29-year-old man unconscious in a Walker Street residence after getting a call from his friend around 8 o’clock last night, Police Chief Thomas Juliano said.

After Officer Nicholas Leto administered the Narcan, “the patient immediately came to,” Juliano said. “It worked.”

The Fairview Ambulance Corps took him to Palisades General Medical Center for further evaluation.

Although primarily intended for heroin users, the drug (Naloxene) reverses the effects of various narcotics and is often used during surgery.

PUBLIC SAFETY: Mahwah police made their second Narcan nasal injection save of an overdosing heroin user in the past two weeks.
