Miracle Roof Stops Rain From Pouring In On West Milford Cancer Fighter

WEST MILFORD, N.J. – The roof of Gwendolyn Bernat’s West Milford home once leaked so badly that she avoided using appliances when it rained, for fear of being electrocuted.

“It was literally raining inside our house,” said Bernat.

Now, she no longer has to worry about rain.

On Monday, volunteers with Carlstadt-based Roof4Roof were at her Inwood Road home to give her a new roof.

The general contractor uses proceeds from every completed project to help a family in need. So far, the company has helped over 700 families.

“One of life’s most basic needs is shelter. Keeping a safe, dry roof over your family’s heads has become increasingly difficult for many homeowners” said Chuck Anania, the company’s president and founder.

Bernat was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, and has undergone more than 28 surgeries. Her battle with cancer forced her to retire early, and her husband and two daughters became her caretakers.

The Bernats – who were declined by their insurance company for the roof repairs and unsuccessfully tried to do repairs on their own – are extremely grateful for their new roof.

“This is a miracle. I can’t thank you guys enough” Gwendolyn Bernat said.
