Holzer will present “Lincoln and the Power of the Press: The War for Public Opinion,” a look at how newspapers courted public opinion during the presidency of Abraham Lincoln.
In Holzer's words, newspapers and politicians were 'mutually dependent and totally inseparable' during that era with no neutrality whatsoever, and his presentation will touch on Lincoln's ability to master the media in that environment.
The presentation also showcases the publishers loyal to Lincoln, the newspaper he bought and the critics who were censored in that hyper-partisan era.
Also, the New York publishers who led the way during Civil War journalism are highlighted, with Holzer touching on the effects of polarization on a larger public debate.
Holzer has had his hand in more than 40 books as an author, co-author, or editor. He is also chair of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, Roger Hertog Fellow at the New-York Historical Society, a winner of the National Humanities Medal, and this year's winner of the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize.
The lecture will be held in the ballroom of the John Jay Homestead State Historic Site at 7 p.m., with registration beginning at 6:15 p.m. with refreshments and a book signing after the lecture.
