MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. – Abolish the Electoral College? The idea has received a ton of attention lately – particularly from those unhappy with the results of the presidential election.

But what might result from such a move? And, what do alternative systems look like?

Prof. Jeanne Zaino, Ph.D., can offer some insight.

Zaino is scheduled to speak on the issue at the League of Women Voters of North East Westchester’s (LWVNEW) annual holiday luncheon at noon on Dec. 13 at La Camelia Restaurant.

Zaino, who will be fielding questions at the luncheon after giving a comprehensive presentation on the Electoral College, is a political scientist, pollster, analyst, commentator, author and columnist, according to a statement from the LWVNEW. She’s appeared on numerous television and radio programs and is a faculty member in the Political Science & International Studies Department at Iona College.

“Clearly the Electoral College is a hot topic right now,” said LWVNEW Co-president Susan Auslander. “The League of Women Voters believes that the direct popular vote method for electing the President and Vice-President is essential to representative government. We are certainly looking forward to Dr. Zaino’s talk.”

Auslander said Zaino is to discuss the National Popular Vote Compact, an alternative to the Electoral College supported by her organization.

Entrance to the luncheon costs $40 and includes salad, entrée, dessert, coffee and tea, tax and gratuity, according to the statement. To reserve a space, contact LWVNEW Co-president Lisa Pizzurro at LCP328@gmail.com. The deadline for reservations is Dec. 6.

La Camelia is located at 234 N. Bedford Road, Mount Kisco.
