In a recorded conversation, visitors to the Katonah Museum of Art can share their stories of home and family. Visitors can record an interview with a trained facilitator, or use a do-it-yourself packet that includes suggested questions and helpful hints for a successful story session.

In addition to everyday museum visitors, the museum will use its connections with community-based organizations to garner oral histories from veterans, seniors and immigrant communities. Collaborators will include Neighbors Link, the Community Center of Northern Westchester, local veterans’ organizations and nearby senior living complexes.

Two spring exhibitions at KMA offer a perfect anchor for an oral history project. The Katonah Relocation Project focuses on the idea of home and relocation as they specifically relate to Katonah’s unique history. Edward Larrabee Barnes and the KMA, focuses on the architecture and construction of the KMA’s current building.

Suggested interview questions focus on the themes of home, family, and relocation and dislocation, recording people’s stories of home, relocation (immigration as well as domestic relocation), and the participants’ thoughts about their community. Interview questions will encourage conversations about home and relocation with specific, but open-ended questions, offering many doorways to talk about family, moving, immigration and change.

The cost is free with museum admission, which is $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and students, members and children under the age of 12. Call (914) 232-9555 ext. 2975 or visit www.katonahmuseum.org for more information. The Katonah Museum of Art is at 134 Jay St. (Route 22), Katonah.
