GREENBURGH, N.Y. Greenburgh families don't have to go far this weekend to get into the Halloween spirit.
Several different events for both children and adults will be held in Greenburgh throughout the weekend, beginning with the Hartsdale Halloween Window Painting Contest on Saturday morning put on by the Greenburgh Parks and Recreation Department.
Also on Saturday, the department will host the annual Hartsdale Spooktoberfest for Kids from 1 to 4 p.m at the Hart's Brook Park and Preserve.
"It's an event that has grown over the last couple years, and a great way to spend the afternoon," said Recreation Supervisor Priscilla Murphy.
Spooktoberfest's events feature ventriloquists, clown acts and music entertainment, as well as games, an obstacle course, hayrides, facepainting and a variety of food vendors to choose from. Greenburgh Nature Center will also participate in Spooktoberfest by bringing small animals for the children to pet, Murphy said.
The festival is the first in Spooktoberfest's two-part series the second being the Haunted Trail and Barn on Oct. 26. Also at the Hart's Brook and Preserve, this event is catered more towards young teens and adults, Murphy said.
Spooktoberfest's activities are not only a chance to bring the community together, but also a way to show locals more about the preserve, Murphy said.
"People don't realize the Hart's Brook Preserve exists," she said. "It's a great way to get information out about the beautiful facility that's right here in Greenburgh."
Spooktoberfest for Kids is $5 per person, while the Haunted Trail and Barn is $8 per person. All proceeds will go towards benefiting the Hope for Change Foundation for breast cancer awareness. Event-goers should park at Ridge Road Park, and a shuttle will take them to the preserve. Tickets can be purchased online or at Anthony F. Veteran Park's registration office.
Greenburgh Nature Center will also hold an event of its own, the Fall Festival on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The annual festival will feature cider-making, scarecrow-building and pumpkin-carving contests, as well as a petting zoo, scavenger hunts and tractor rides.
The Fall Festival usually brings in at least 1,000 people every year, said Esther James, the nature center's visitor services assistant. Live music and a zip line will also accompany the event. To attend the Fall Festival, pre-register online.
