KATONAH, N.Y. -- Katonah Village Library will host author Esmeralda Santiago on Monday, Jan. 25, in the library's lower level.

Santiago is a best-selling author, award-winning screenwriter and essayist.

Her first groundbreaking memoir, "When I was Puerto Rican," is an artful, painful, and funny account of her rural early years and move to New York City as a teenager.

Each of her memoirs since has received critical praise: "Almost a Woman" (Alex Award from the American Library Association and Peabody-award winning film adaptation) and "The Turkish Lover." Her novel, "America’s Dream," has been translated into six languages. Her most recent and epic novel, "Conquistadora" (2011), was completed three years after her stroke and recovery. Santiago has also written a children’s book and two literary anthologies.

Santiago lives in Westchester with her husband Frank Cantor. The couple founded a media production company that has won numerous awards for excellence in educational and documentary film making.

Santiago has designed and developed community programs for adolescents at risk, and is passionate about the need to encourage and support the artistic development of young people with storytelling and media literacy.

The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with refreshments and mingling. All are welcome.

Santiago's presentation is part of the combined Katonah Village Improvement Society and Katonah Village Library Annual Meeting. Each of these two organizations will hold 15-minute meetings to report on their progress and goals prior Santiago's talk.

For further information about the event, call the library at 914-232-3508.

The library is at 26 Bedford Road, Katonah.
