An InterCall survey found that 65 percent of the time workers are doing other work while on a conference call. Some other tasks in which employees engage while on conference calls include sending emails (63 percent), eating or making food (53 percent), texting (44 percent) and checking social media (43 percent).

InterCall is the world’s largest conference call company. Its study found the percentage of people using mobile phones to dial into conference calls has been rising steadily over the past three years, from 19.4 percent of all calls in 2011 to 21.2 percent in 2013.

Here some of the stranger places workers have been on conference calls:

  • “In the middle of the woods during a hiking trip”
  • “Outside while grilling and getting a tan”
  • “The tunnel leading to NYC”
  • “A truck stop bathroom”
  • “McDonald’s Playplace”
  • “Behind a church during a wedding rehearsal”
  • “The racetrack”
  • “DisneyWorld"
